Common Questions About the BGS Program

How is BGS different from a traditional bachelor’s degree?

The Bachelor of General Studies is a flexible degree completion program for students with prior college credit. Instead of following a narrow set of major requirements, BGS focuses on UConn’s general education and degree requirements, giving students more flexibility to use transfer credits and shape a path to graduation.

Do I need an associate degree to apply?

No. You do not need an associate degree to apply to the BGS program. Students may apply with at least 60 college credits from a degree-granting accredited college or university and a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7.

What if I don’t have 60 credits?

If you do not yet have 60 transferable credits, you may be able to begin as a non-degree student and take courses that count toward your future degree. This can help you build credits and move toward BGS admission. A BGS advisor can help you plan the best next step.

What GPA do I need to apply?

To be considered for admission, students typically need a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale. Students below a 2.7 GPA are encouraged to speak with an academic advisor about possible next steps.

What if I don’t have a 2.7 GPA?

If you do not yet have a 2.7 GPA, there may be options to look toward, such as taking a class as a non-degree student to boost your GPA. A BGS advisor can help you plan the best next step.

How many transfer credits can I bring?

Students may transfer up to 90 credits toward the Bachelor of General Studies. UConn may also accept up to 30 credits of unassigned electives, which can help many previous courses apply toward the degree even when they do not match a direct UConn course equivalent.

Can I take BGS classes online?

Yes. BGS students can choose from available online, hybrid, evening, and on-campus classes. This flexibility can make it more convenient for working professionals, parents, and other adult learners to complete a UConn bachelor’s degree while balancing other responsibilities.

Is BGS available on all UConn campuses?

Yes. The BGS program is available at UConn’s four regional campuses (Avery Point, Hartford, Stamford, and Waterbury) and the Storrs campus, giving students access to flexible course options across Connecticut.

Can current UConn students switch to BGS?

Yes. Current UConn students who are considering BGS as a more flexible path to graduation can connect with the BGS advising team to discuss whether the program is a good fit and how previously completed coursework may apply.

How much does BGS cost?

Tuition and fees depend on your enrollment pattern and campus. For current BGS tuition information, review the tuition and fees page. BGS tuition is the same for in-state and out-of-state students.

What support is available to BGS students?

BGS students work with academic advisors who help review transfer credits, explain degree requirements, build a personalized plan of study, and support progress toward graduation.

How do I get started?

A good first step is to request information, attend an information session, and connect with the BGS team to review your academic background and discuss the best path toward applying or changing your major.

Questions Adult Learners and Returning Students Often Ask

I’ve been out of school for years. Will my credits still count?

In many cases, yes. BGS works with students returning after a long break, and your transcripts can be reviewed to determine how older credits may apply toward your degree.

Can I apply without an associate degree?

Yes. You do not need an associate degree to apply to the BGS program. Students may be eligible with at least 60 transferable college credits from an accredited institution and a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7. If you are close to those thresholds, the BGS team can help you understand the best next step.

How long could it take to finish?

The timeline depends on how many previous credits apply and how many classes you take each term. Because BGS may accept up to 90 transfer credits, many students are closer to graduation than they expect.

Can I balance BGS with work and family responsibilities?

Yes. BGS is designed for students balancing work, family, and other responsibilities, with online, hybrid, evening, and on-campus options across all five UConn campuses.

Will I fit in as an adult learner or returning student?

Many BGS students are adult learners, parents, working professionals, veterans, and students returning after time away from college. The program is designed for students with a wide range of life and academic experiences, and many appreciate learning in an environment that reflects that diversity.

Is BGS a full UConn bachelor’s degree?

Yes. The Bachelor of General Studies is a full University of Connecticut bachelor’s degree. Students complete UConn coursework, learn from UConn faculty, and earn an undergraduate degree from the University of Connecticut.

Is UConn accredited?

Yes. The University of Connecticut is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE), a regional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Because NECHE accreditation applies to UConn as an institution, BGS students earn a full UConn bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.
